Pirates and Princesses

Wondering around toy stores nowadays, especially when looking at the 0-3 years age bracket, you’d be forgiven for thinking that there are two types of people in this world: pirates and princesses.

There’s a lot written about ‘princess culture’. But something that strikes me is….why the emphasis on pirates?

Pirates. Defined in the Oxford English Dictionary ‘a person who attacks and robs ships at sea.’

For heaven’s sake, why do I want my two-year influenced by, let’s face it, a criminal? Why is it cute to dress him up in a hat with a skull and crossbones on it – with all the attendant connotations of death? Why give him a (plastic) cutlass, when in all probability many would shrink from giving him a toy gun?

It’s time to stop this emphasis on pirates. After all, we wouldn’t think a two year old armed robber was cute, would we?
