I am currently reading the book ‘Cinderella Ate My Daughter’. I haven’t finished it yet but I’m already getting stressed….and BabyGirl is only 18 months old!
But here’s one way that I’m thinking I might deal with the relentless onslaught of skewed messages that seem to be heading BabyGirl’s (and BabyBoy’s) way.
‘It’s not real, honey.’
Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast…..nice stories honey, but they’re not real.
Bratz, Barbie, Monster High….that’s not how real people look and act, honey.
That peer pressure you feel…half of the nasty things little girls say are made up or misunderstood…it’s not real, honey.
Those billboards staring down at you, the models looking out from magazine covers…..it’s all make-up, photoshop, clever lighting….it’s not real, honey.
The ‘reality’ shows, the gossip magazines, the ads….it’s all set up for ratings and trying to sell you stuff…it’s not real, honey.
Which will then lead to another question (post)….what is real?
