The Mommy Myth

Blame it on society, guilt or some weird conspiracy to keep women in their place (!)….but there’s no denying that there is a pervasive concept that motherhood is somehow all-fulfilling for women, and that a ‘good mom’ is one who sacrifices herself, her time, her health, her being for her kids.

(Ever hear that about fatherhood? But I digress.)

But, and I cannot stress this too strongly, that is a myth.

It is ok not to be totally fulfilled by your baby / child.

It is ok to need to take a break from your kids (scratch that, it’s essential).

It is ok to need adult conversation (and adult conservation that is not about kids).

It is ok to need sleep (another essential).

It is ok to need time with your partner.

It is ok to spend time with your own friends.

It is ok to realise that you are a whole person separate from your kids.

All these things are ok. They do not make you a bad mom. They do not make you selfish. And the sooner you accept these things, the happier mommy you’ll be!
